What comes off the farm

Everything sold here is raised or made on the farm. Ask for current prices and what is in the cooler when you call.

Beef

Grain-finished, sold by the pound. About fifty cow-calf pairs in a closed herd, with every calf kept on the farm from calving through to harvest. Licensed for retail meat sales in Kansas since 2020.

Eggs

From the farm's own chickens.

Produce

Vegetables from the garden, in season.

Preserves

Jams, jellies and apple butter, canned on the farm.

Saturday Farmers Market

Saturday mornings, 8:00 to 11:00

On the sidewalk in front of Sullivan Square, High Street. Runs through the summer season.

The farm

Clint and Ashley Hornberger run the farm southwest of Baldwin City, in Douglas County. Clint is the fifth generation of his family to work this ground, and their three sons are the sixth.

They keep the herd closed, which means every animal sold was born on the farm. The cattle are moved through the pastures on a rotation, and the crop ground is worked with cover crops and no-till. Kansas Farm Bureau named them a Farm Family of the Year in 2023.

Both work off the farm as well. Ashley is a crop insurance underwriter. Clint trains firefighters for the Kansas Fire Rescue Training Institute and serves as assistant chief of Willow Springs Fire District 3.

1872

Gotthold Hornberger buys the land from Christian Haas.

1973

A new milking parlor goes up. The farm runs as a dairy for roughly fifty-five years, milking around 140 head a day.

2007

Clint moves the operation out of dairy and into beef cattle.

2020

A Kansas retail meat license lets the farm sell beef by the pound direct to customers.
